C'River NIPR Pays Courtesy Visit To Dr Ekwok, Reiterates Sustained Partnership With Institute

The Head of Department Mass Communication, University of Calabar, Dr Lawrence Ekwok has reiterated the department's commitment to partnering with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) given that it has a strong PR programme which is among the unbundled programmes in the department.

He made this disclosure on Thursday during a courtesy visit on him by the NIPR delegation led by its Chairman,Ben Okache.
While interacting with the NIPR team, Dr Ekwok advocated the need to have a Liaison Officer for NIPR in the department of Mass Communication which would help in ensuring that information flows to everyone in the department to key into NIPR's programmes.
" I would advise the institute to have a Liaison Officer that we can hold responsible so that he would be able to relate between the department and the institute.If your Programmes are structured, we are committed to making sure NIPR Cross River State is strong".

According to Dr Ekwok, NIPR should also focus on making Mass communication students in the university integral to their programmes in order to encourage them to key into their programmes.
According to him, the department is committed to making sure that all the programmes in mass communication which includes Public Relations stand alone and function effectively.
He also urged NIPR to "come up with an idea for the students so as to create more awareness, impact and desire and we are available for you, try to also support our department to grow".
The Mass Communication helmsman also intimated NIPR officials that the department won the hosting rights for the forthcoming African Council For Communication Education (ACCE), conference to be held in October 2025 in Calabar and appealed to NIPR leadership for support.
The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations' visit to the Dr Ekwok was to seek collaboration and synergy on the best way to harness the benefits of PR for professionals in the department.
In a remark, Benedict Okache, Chairman of NIPR Cross River State used the opportunity to congratulate the Head of Department, Dr Lawrence Ekwok over his appointment as new helman of the department.
Okache, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations acknowledged the critical role the department plays in advancing the practice of Public Relations and appealed to the department to partner with the institute for all its programmes in the state and the forthcoming conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
"In this year's conference, we are focusing more on solid minerals and being that Public Relations can help people to understand what mining is all about; harnessing the importance of mining in the forthcoming Uyo programme is very important".
The NIPR chairman also stated that the institute is in collaboration with an international scholar in the United States to institute an award for "the best PR Students' award" to deserving students of the department during the University's convocation.
On his part, Hon Dr Pat Ene-Okon, Sub Dean Faculty of Arts, noted that team mass communication has taken note of the interaction and would ensure increased synergy with NIPR going forward.
The mass communication team comprised Prof Stanislaus Iyorza, Prof Presly Obukoadata, Dr Eric Ogri while NIPR members during the interaction included, Dr Austin Mbosa, State Secretary, Margaret Okoi, Welfare Director II and Ifeyinwa Giddings Akpo.
